"Today I also had the chance to try a qualifying tyre and I was able to go below 2.01; I think that Michelin have done a very good job over the winter. We tried the 16" tyre again and I am still sure that it's good for us, although we still need more time to work on it with Michelin. Overall it's been a very positive test for us."

But whilst most teams will now head straight to Phillip Island for another test, Yamaha has instead elected to miss the Australian outing and instead return to action for the third and final Sepang test on 5th, 6th and 7th February.

"Most of the other teams will go to Phillip Island now, but we will return here in ten days with more new things to test," confirmed Rossi. "We still need to work on the engine, although for this early stage it's very good. So far we have concentrated on power delivery, rather than on the power itself, but this is only the first test of the year so there is plenty more time!"

Edwards also left Malaysia with a smile on his face, having solved his day two concerns by adopting a set-up similar to his team-mate's.

"I'm heading home feeling really happy after three excellent day's work. We didn't do so much today, 22 laps, but it was enough to back up what we've learnt this week and finish feeling sure about everything. We changed direction with tyres a bit today and went towards the package Valentino's been using and that definitely improved things even more; my fastest lap was on a race tyre similar to the one he's been using quite a bit," said the Texan. "We didn't try a qualifier, but I really felt that I got into the 'zone' on the race tyre and that was when my best time came. We tried a new front and a new rear as well and they were both great, the tyre situation in general is really good. We played around a bit with the setting too and tested a few things Valentino's been using, but actually I preferred my setting so we came back to that. So that's it for the first test and it's been really encouraging. A quick rest now and then we'll be back for more!"

Bereit. Rossis Gegner sind nach der Bestzeit des WM-Zweiten gewarnt. "Ich habe mehr Motivation als je zuvor, eine Menge sehr viel!", betonte er. "Es wäre seltsam gewesen wenn ich 2006 trotz vieler Stürze, Pech und Verletzungen Weltmeister geworden wäre. Mit so vielen Fehlern musst du den Titel verlieren. Am Ende war ich froh, dass ich verloren haben. Nein, das war ein Spaß! Aber ich war irgendwie darauf vorbereitet. Man kann nicht pausenlos gewinnen. Jetzt ist es passiert, und ich bin bereit für 2007."


Der dünnhäutige Superstar

Valentino Rossi beim Sepang-Test: Bestzeit mit den Michelin-Qualifyern und überragend bei der Rennsimulation. "Die neue 800er Yamaha gefällt mir!"

Valentino Rossi heizte den Gegnern beim ersten Test-Stelldichein nach dem Testverbot bei Saunatemperaturen in Malaysia tüchtig ein. Der enthronte MotoGP-König knackte als einziger Fahrer die 2:01-min-Barriere und knatterte mit 2`00,93 min auf Qualifyern zur Bestzeit. Damit blieb er zwar 0,3 sec über seiner 990-ccm-Pole-Position von 2006, aber seine Leistung mit Rennreifen signalisierte seine knallharten Absichten, die schmerzvollen Erinnerungen an den Titelverlust aus der Welt zu schaffen. Mit Rennreifen gelang Rossi am letzten Tag nur die sechstbeste Zeit-2:02,60. Aber in einer 20-Runden-Rennsimulation drehte er unfassbare 13 Runden unter 2:03 min, in Runde 12 legte er mit Rennreifen seine persönliche Bestzeit vor 2:02,61. Rossi macht keinen Hehl daraus, dass er und Yamaha alles dransetzen werden, um in dieser Saison WM-Titel Nr. 8 an Land zu ziehen. Dabei gibt es bisher keinen Hauptsponsor als Nachfolger für Camel und nocht nicht einmal einen Namen, für die 800er mit dem Reihenmotor. Nach dem Long-Run am heißesten Testtag waren Rossis Hände und Zehen mit Blasen übersät.
"Viel Motivation" Rossi schüttete literweiße Wasser in sich hinein, um den Flüssigkeitsverlust wettzumachen und war 20 Minuten lang nicht fähig, mit seiner Crew ein technisches Debriefing abzuhalten. "Fuck, mir tut alles weh", seufzte er. "Das war eine sehr schwierige Simulation. Nach der langen Testpause ist meine Haut noch sehr dünnhäutig, sogar am Arschf habe ich wunde Stellen! Es war so heiß, es fühlte sich an, als würde ein Freund auf dem Motorrad mitfahren. Aber solche Simulationen gefallen mir. Sie geben mir viel Motivation, ausserdem verstehe ich dann besser, auf welchem Level wir uns befinden. Ich bin schnell gewesen und habe viel Freude mit dem Benehmen des Motorrads. Das Fahren mit dieser 800er macht Spaß." Rossi zeigte wieder einmal, dass seine Stärke im letzten Teil des Rennens liegt, weil er mit abgenutzten Reifen vorbildlich zurechtkommt. Im Vergleich zu Suzuki war Rossi nach zehn Runden 2,7 sec hinter Hopkins. Aber in der zweiten Hälfte fuhr er 2,8 sec schneller als John und übertraf ihn um 0,104 sec.
"Rossi mag die 800er" "Inzwischen mag ich die 800er", versichert der siebenfache Weltmeister. " Du kannst die ganze Piste nützen, die Linien sind wichtiger als vorher. Der Kurvenspeed zählt, da hilft mir die 250er-Vergangenheit. Dieses Bike verschleisst die Reifen weniger, das freut mich. Wir brauchen mehr Bremsstabilität. Denn die WM wird hart, alle Hersteller sind enger zusammengeruckt, das sieht man bei Suzuki und Kawasaki. Wir sind nicht viel schneller als die Konkurrenz." Für den nächsten Sepang-Test ab 5.02 erwartet Rossi zusätzlich PS. Deshalb verzichtet er auf Phillip Island. Rossi: " Bei der 800er ist die perfekte Balance zwischen maximaler Power und Fahrbarkeit vorrangig."

Edwards and Rossi lead the way in Sepang.

Four teams and seven riders took to the track today (Monday 5th February) in Malaysia, for MotoGP's second visit to Sepang of 2007.

The teams testing in Sepang were absent from last week's Australian excursion continued their 800cc development in the humid Malaysian conditions, in the first of three testing days.

Yamaha factory riders, Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi took the early initiative in Asia, by topping the timesheets. Edwards put in a lap of 2mins 02.175sec on the latest version of the M1, edging out team-mate and five-time MotoGP World Champion Rossi by under 5 hundredths of a second. The Italian, who committed his future to the factory for the next two seasons last week, rode the fewest laps of any rider on day one, completing just 40 circuits.

Randy de Puniet aboard his Kawasaki was the only other rider to break the 2mins 03secs barrier, albeit over half a second slower than the two official Yamaha representatives. The Frenchman grafted hard on the opening day, and put in over twice as many laps as Rossi on the Ninja ZX-RR800.

As he continues to adapt to the Yamaha M1 with Dunlop tyres, a product of his switch this season from Luca Montiron's Michelin-shod Honda team, Makoto Tamada was fourth fastest, ahead of the French duo of Olivier Jacque and his fellow Yamaha Tech 3 rider Sylvain Guintoli. The Japanese rider improved going quicker than at the opening test of the year in January.

Ilmor, making their first appearance outside of Europe, only had one rider, Andrew Pitt attend Sepang for this week's proceedings. His team-mate Jeremy McWilliams is still on the mend after surgery on his leg, and is expected to return to action for the Official Test in Qatar. Pitt put 49 laps worth of miles on the Ilmor GP bike's clock, adding to the small number he was able to undertake in Almeria last month.

Rossi hits the front at Sepang.



Valentino Rossi moved to the head of the pack on the second day of MotoGP testing in Malaysia as the Italian swapped places with team-mate Colin Edwards on the Sepang timesheets.

Having played second fiddle to the American on the opening day, Rossi posted the fastest time of the week so far onboard the Yamaha M1 with a best lap of 2min 02.099secs as he continues to get to grips with the new 800cc machine. It put the five-time champion just 0.019secs clear of Edwards, who improved his time from Monday but was unable to retain his place on top of the times.

Behind the two Yamaha factory riders, there was no change among the remaining five riders in action as they remained in the same places they had held on the opening day. Randy de Puniet's third fastest time – nearly half a second behind Rossi – came despite a light crash on the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR80. The Frenchman completed more laps than any other rider over the course of the day as he completed a race simulation on the Kawasaki Racing machine.

Makoto Tamada continued to work with the Yamaha Tech 3 version of the M1, and was the quickest rider from the satellite team in fourth place - the Japanese star under a second slower than Rossi's official bike.

Olivier Jacque joined team-mate de Puniet in putting in a large number of laps, as he prepares to make his return to the premier category following a year away while Sylvain Guintoli rounded out the top six ahead of his maiden MotoGP campaign.

Newcomers Illmor continued to run a single bike for Andrew Pitt, Jeremy McWilliams still recovering from his broken leg, and the Australian improved his best time – although he was still well of the pace of the leaders



Sepang III MotoGP test times - Tuesday.

The test is the final one of three held at the Malaysian circuit prior to the start of the 2007 season at Losail in March. The next MotoGP test will be at the Qatar venue from February 13-15.

Colin Edwards beschließt Sepang-Test mit Hammerrunde


Colin Edwards fuhr mit der 800er-Yamaha schneller als mit dem Vorgängermodell. Unglaublich aber wahr: Die 800er-Maschinen sind jetzt schon schneller als ihre 990er-Vorgänger. Colin Edwards lieferte beim dritten Testtag in Sepang den Beweis. Der Yamaha-Werksfahrer fuhr 0,4 Sekunden schneller als Valentino Rossi bei seiner Pole-Position im September beim Grand-Prix-Rennen.

Edwards fuhr Bestzeit in 2.00,248 Minuten. Teamkollege Rossi folgte auf Platz zwei mit 0,5 Sekunden Rückstand. Die anderen fünf Piloten büßten über 1,2 Sekunden auf die beiden Yamaha-Werksfahrer ein. „Ich kann die Zeit nicht glauben, da ich in der schnellsten Runde einige kleinere Fehler eingebaut hatte“, wunderte sich Edwards.

Vor dem WM-Auftakt am 10. März in Katar testen alle Teams gemeinsam noch zweimal, in Jerez und Barcelona, an je drei Tagen. (WP)
