Yamaha Racing Team rider Jamie Stauffer claimed his second consecutive Australian Superbike Championship after taking both round wins in front of a record crowd for a round of the national series of 12,500 at the double-header sixth and seventh rounds of the series at Queensland Raceway this weekend.
After extending his series lead to 61pts after taking the overall honours in Saturday’s sixth round, Stauffer went into Sunday’s seventh round and two races in the box seat to wrap up back-to-back Australian championships with one round still to run.
Making his intentions clear, the 28-year-old set a new Superbike lap record of 1:09.145 for the 3.12km Ipswich circuit on the fifth lap in Sunday’s opening 16-lap race, a time 1.8583sec below Garth Tander’s V8 Supercar lap record.
Stauffer then engaged in a two-man, 270kmh war with his Yamaha teammate – and elder brother – Dan, before pulling off a forceful last-corner, last-lap pass to take a 0.280sec victory and extend his championship lead to 66pts.
Needing only a seventh place in the second of Sunday’s two races, Stauffer led the early laps before being passed by Team Yoshimura Suzuki rider Craig Coxhell, the latter going on to record a 5.019sec win while Stauffer settled for a safe second place – and the 2007 title.
“I thought of trying to go with Craig when he came by, but I also had a championship at stake,” said Stauffer. “I don’t like coming second in any race, but in this case two overall round wins, a new lap record and the 2007 championship isn’t a bad weekend’s work. I’m happy.”
Coxhell also took a win off Stauffer in the first of Saturday’s two races, but was unable to match the consistent pace of the Yamaha rider over the four-race weekend.
“My bike’s got a lot of horsepower, but trying to hang on to it over the bumps at this circuit is the hardest thing,” said 24-year-old Coxhell, the 2003 Australian Superbike Champion.
“I got a bad start in Sunday’s first race, and lost too much time in the early laps trying to get passed other riders. I should be happy with two wins out of four races, but it could have been a lot better. Congratulations to Jamie – he rode well and deserved his wins this weekend.”
Coxhell’s win in Sunday’s final race has moved him to second in the championship, five points clear of Dan Stauffer. The latter was unable to match his second place in today’s opening race as his rear tyre lost grip, and he faded to fifth place.
“I was having trouble getting drive off the turns after about lap seven,” said the 30-year-old. “Fifth was the best I could salvage in that second race, but we’re still in with a good chance of giving Yamaha a one-two in the championship.”
Teknic Honda rider Russell Holland, who qualified on pole, finished fourth overall after recording third and fourth placings in today’s two races.
“I’m pretty disappointed with how things worked out in the races,” said the 23-year-old. “I was expecting a lot more from this weekend, but we just didn’t have the race pace to challenge for the win.”
Jamie Stauffer’s weekend of dominance at Queensland Raceway’s double-header event continued with round wins in the Supersport class, his points haul over both days catapulting him to a 6pt lead in the eight-round series over Yamaha teammate Jason O’Halloran. Stauffer, who won both the Australian Superbike and Supersport titles in 2006, will now head to the final round at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway on August 19 with a chance to make it back-to-back double crowns in both classes – the first rider to do so.
