Sepang resurfacing prompts tyre worries
By Toby Moody Monday, October 15th 2007, 12:53 GMT
A new track surface at Sepang is set to cause havoc for riders trying to choose their allocation of 31 tyres for the Malaysian MotoGP weekend.
The circuit was resurfaced in August, meaning that the teams are going to a circuit they know, but with an unfamiliar surface. They had faced similar situations at Laguna Seca and the Sachsenring this year.
Suzuki test rider Nobuatsu Aoki recently tested at Sepang using a Superbike fitted with MotoGP tyres, and
autosport.com understands that the tyres Suzuki's MotoGP team had used at their pre-season test in Malaysia only lasted five laps on the new surface, which is reportedly tremendously abrasive.
New rules this season prevent teams sending MotoGP bikes to a track before the actual race has taken place, except for official tests under the auspices of IRTA.
But that does not prevent tyre manufacturers going to circuits with Superbikes that can lap within two or three seconds of a MotoGP bike.
