@ Catty how do you suppose that we get things signed if we are meant to be officiating all the time? I had a quick look @ the GP program in the newsagents the other day and it says that Vale will be at the stand at 12-1 on friday.
The only thing is that at that time I will have to be friggin working. |
Ah, but not after the race, not after the race!
You hung in there... gotta confess, I was a little worried, I thought Mitch was gonna stay glued there till we came and rescued him the next day. One detirmined boy with helmet in his hot little hand.
BUT HE SCORED!
Where to start!
It was F***KING EXCELLENT!
Paddock officials don't do race paddock stuff anymore, so our HQ was the support paddock and mostly looking after the national riders... which was really cool, having them all going past all the time. I love the smell of petrol fumes in the day!
But we were sort of a mobile unit. We get put around the track here and there to fill in numbers, we GOT TO BE THE HUMAN WALL AT PITLANE FOR THE START OF ALL THREE RACES...
You can see us on the above shots of the grid... we form the line that divides pitlane into one side for the riders leaving their garages to go on the grid, and their crews all walk behind us. So really great having them all burn past.
Gotta confess, though, I was sent on a security mission to get national riders out of the bushes in Blue Park (which is the bush that is around the pond in the middle of the circuit) when motogp left their garages, and when I heard the engines, I actually was running to get back to my spot... and I'd put dibs to be opposite row number four of the grid. When I got back, parched, sweating, puffed, there was the boy, and I just pushed in. You can tell where I am... there are three orange people standing bunched together when everyone else is spaced apart!
We knew in the morning that the riders would use the return road at turn 4, so I lovingly swept great chunks of roadways free of gravel in the morning... oh, and to help the national riders... poor boys getting their tyres embedded with gravel before hitting the track.
Once again, we made it onto the coverage... when the onboard camera on Casey's bike showed him leaving the track, we were the orange people stopping the masses from getting to their cars to keep the road clear. So had them all ride by at close proximity AGAIN!
Actually, that's the best part of working at the track. Some of the most amazing spots to watch the races... and better views than those in the VIP buildings. Just gotta stand or sit on wet grass.. but it was an inconvenience I was willing to put up with.
Best spot we got overall was on pit straight at point five... which is where the riders have left the buildings behind and are accelerating on pitlane before entering the track. Right in front of a big screen. So they are whizzing past about a metre and a half away from you... and riding towards you as you look down the track.
Of course, I'd scored the job being quickest to put my hand up... and was promised relief so I wouldn't be there all day. Watched the 250s FP1, motogp ready to roll... Bloody Tassie turns up to relieve me! I told her to eff off, but nope... selfish cow! So she got to see the motogp dudes up close leaving pitlane, and not me.
Actually the highlight of getting that spot is when I first turned up to get posted and get instructions... I was at the end of the garages - kawasaki was the last team nearest the grid... and Valentino was just going past... standing up and doing his rearrangement of his tackle and sorting his bum leather out. HIGHLIGHT!
After that, it's just incidents and anecdotes.
Scored a piccie with Jeremy on Thursday... he came into the support paddock. He was standing and talking for ages, so I had time to get the nerve to ask him for a photo.
F**k me dead, he is so bloody sweet and nice! A really warm, charming type. Like we all know that anyway, but in person, he's like that but extra!
When i was taking Tassie's photo with him, couldn't help but have a gush... said congrats on the WC, he said "Yeah, the boy did well", but I said, "Nooo, this is about you (or something like that), the Yamaha has raced so well."
He just gave me a bit of an "Oh yeah" smile. Was very hard to try and quickly edit all that could be said into a sentence. I struggled! But was dead chuffed to meet him. And of course, smaller than I expected.
DON"T GET ME STARTED ON SMALLER!
They are all sooooo tiny!
Even Rossi was shorter than expected. Sure enough... all my harpingabout people always put their height at more than it is... he's got maybe, MAYBE half an inch on me. Hard to tell, he was still in his leathers and boots... so boots add height, leathers take it away.
But of all of them, Rossi is the only one that actually looks like he does in photos.
Nicky Hayden's skin isn't as smooth and pretty in real life... he looks more beat up... Jorge looks like he's about ten years old... Casey is way smaller.....
ANd Randy... don't get me started. Realised soooo should have gotten a picture with him just to show it... but was too busy making 'ello 'ello noises at him.
Actually, i look back and realised that totally neglected a million photo ops with other riders... they were just walking around the race paddock after the race (oh, yeah, made sure security stepped aside then to get in) and instead was bogged down the mob around Valentino.
We were standing next to his gargage when no one else was, waiting... he went in there, came out and signed a few autographs and took a couple of pics... of bloody newcomers! It was an outrage!
BUT.... that lead to the best "feel" of the weekend. Took some blurry pics of him getting mobbed... he was getting ushered past me, about a metre away... I was thinking, no pic with him, that's a bore... started noticing his leathers... they've always held a fascination for me... love the rider's leathers... and took my chance.
I went low when everyone else went high! There was a gap between people's hips, so in I went! Mission not so impossible.
I reached out and my hand was on his hip, could feel the roughness of the fabric stuff, then thought, what the hell, I'm going for gold!
So just slid my hand down and rubbed my palm back and forth over THE DOCTOR bit, then just all over, then he was out of reach!
Now, before people get all worked up about sexual molestation... there was no grabbing, no digging in of fingers, no pinching, none of that. Just open palm running over the ultra smooth leather - really really smooth and soft, BTW.
Anyway, I doubt he would have felt it, and if he did and wasn't happy... I guess I would apologise... maybe. LOL.
But I took my chance cause it was sneaky and anonymous. If he was facing me, or had seen me, no bloody way I would have done it.
Poor Valentino... such a sexy beast.
Nearly got taken out by Jorge on his paddock scooter on Thursday night. Tassie saw what happened, I had my back to it all, leaving the race paddock, next thing Ihear this scooter right behind me so I lept onto a nearby plant and clung to it.
Tassie said he was trying to smoke the rear tyre, and he was there, trying again and again... realised it was a missed photo op, but I kept thinking he wanted to go past me, so kept clinging to my plant and wondering what the f**k he was doing. Then he gave a "oh well" look to Tassie and the trackie we were with... not sure if I should mention names...
Actually, just occured to me... perhaps he wanted to do a photo op. I'd been molesting Rossi's scooter he was walking behind me a couple of times from his demountable... so he graciously followed us... but we were too dumb to take our chance!
Oh, and this is when first saw Uccio... Tassie was doing the "look, look" thing... cause again, I had my back to the frigging action (seemed that that happened a lot to me) and I'm looking right at him, he's about 50cm away from me, and I didn't recognise him! Can you believe that! He just looked so different. Hair seemed paler, he seemed little! He had come out for a smoke, I think.
Actually, after the race, tonnes of the fiat yam guys were all lighting up. Ah, kindred spirits!
Anyway, I got all shy and decided to get the f**k out of dodge. Then, when Jorge followed us, forgot to do anything about it!
Got to once go on the track between classes... might have been FP3 to help clear gravel, etc. So that was nice. (Like I said, we were a mobile pair... our boss was the greatest... he's a fan of the racing, too, and understands that we want to see as much as possible.
I was just terrified that a big crash would happen (Melandri had a beauty there the next day, and one of our team members, short, chubby, middle aged, had to do the run... so glad it wasn't me. I tried liftinga hay bale and running with it... no chance. I said I'd bring the fire extinguisher... a couple of riders came off (it was turn 4), but the two blokes I was with did the work...didn't need the extra person. PHEW.
I had this fear of running out and doing something wrong and getting yelled at by a rider, all caught on international TV and then having that long walk back to my point, crying.
But the woman who helped Melandri... she scored a great chunk of fairing for her efforts. I ran over to his bike whilst it was on it's trailor getting ready to go back to the garage and made a point of stroking the 33 on the front. Ah. Just to get a touch.
Anyway, Tassie and I went into the race paddock after everyone had left and scored a couple of souvenirs... I got a towel and pen of Rossi's... the towel is already washed, so if there was any DNA on it... oh well. The pen has some faint scratches at the top... so possible from Rossi putting it in his mouth whilst he thought about what amazing thing to write.
He had a schedule for Monza Rally on the wall... so perhaps he's participating? SOrry, not up to speed on his activities... haven't been visiting enough.
Also scored his schedule for the whole weekend. He and Jorge shared the same page, Valentino's was highlighted. Got Dani's as well... they have to attend Local Honda/Yamaha events... for like 15 minutes.
Haha, in Dani's room... he had photocopies of spanish paper's sports sections... the front one had an article about Toni Elias... so, obviously Dani likes to keep up to speed.
Something else that had me all chuffed... anyone ever watch the italian interviews of Rossi after races on youtube? The guy who does them was there.... short, chubby with a beard, so i went over in halting italian and said I love him and his interviews... but he spoke english, or he understood "youtube"... dunno, but he was busy, but seemed happy for the compliment. I was almost as happy to see him as I was Rossi.
And of course... Rossi's ritual of coming out at the start of the 125s....
