"The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy." The shyest color and the boldest, pink has soul. It's the color of the underside of a twilight cloud. A puff of cotton candy at a summer fair. The inside of a seashell. A baby's ear. The nose of a kitten. The rose of a shy admirer. The blush of a flirt. The promise of relief (in the guise of Pepto-Bismol). So much more than merely a pale version of red, the color pink can be innocent or it can be sleazy, cheap as a street-bought carnation, precious as a damask rose. Both colors denote love, but while red is direct, hot and passionate, pink is flirtatious and romantic. Pink is charming. Artists will tell you that pink is one of the hardest colors to get right. Just a touch too much one way or another, and pink is nauseating where it might be soothing, artificial where it might be as natural as the dawn. Pink appears in many shades: dusty rose, coral, flesh, fuchsia, blush, flush, incarnadine, rosy, salmon . . . Pink pops up everywhere, but pop culture is particularly fond of it. From Pinky Lee to Pink Floyd to the single-named pop singer Pink to "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," pink is pre-eminent in movies, music and more. "Pretty in Pink." Nick Drake's "Pink Moon." "Music From Big Pink." Mr. Pink from "Reservoir Dogs." The Pink Panther. The Pink Ladies. Pink Lady and Jeff. The Legendary Pink Dots. Pink Martini. The Pink Pussycat Lounge. The Pink Dot, and Pink's hot dogs. "A pink carnation and a pickup truck." Bruce Springsteen and Aretha Franklin, both riding in a pink Cadillac; John Mellencamp dreaming of little pink houses for you and me. "Under the Pink" with Tori Amos. Pink flamingos and "Pink Flamingos." "Pink," fashion legend Diana Vreeland famously proclaimed, "is the navy blue of India." And though pink cycles in and out of fashion, it never goes away. During the mid-'50s, anything pink was in: pink refrigerators, pink lipstick, pink poodle skirts and dress shirts, pink typewriters, pink automobiles, pink toilet paper. Pink lightbulbs to flatter your complexion. Fifty years later, pink is officially back in: Women's Wear Daily's Oct. 15 issue declared pink the color for spring 2004, noting it's become more and more popular no matter the season. Signs of this pink renaissance: Custom-pink Vespas are one of the most sought-after transportation vehicles -- it's not a standard color, so many women are buying them white and repainting them pink. Pink watchbands were the rage last Christmas, from plastic Swatches to diamond-encrusted Cartiers. Dolce & Gabbana's alligator purses and pumps in several shades of pink are said to be must-have accessories for fall. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is exhibiting the art and fashion design of Elsa Schiaparelli, the creator of "shocking pink," now known as "hot pink." Somewhere back in time, pink became the universal color of girls, the hue of the feminine, the antithesis of blue. This led to the term "pink-collar," pertaining to jobs "traditionally" held by women. The sweet and playful side of pink makes it a signifier of fun and kid stuff. Bubble gum and strawberry milk shakes. Pink lemonade. Hello Kitty. Half the contents of a box of Good and Plenty. Grown-ups learned to have fun with pink, too, in the form of sweet cocktails like Cosmopolitans or sloe gin fizzes, Pink Squirrel and Pink Ladies (gin, grenadine and egg white, shaken and strained before serving), pink champagne and rose wine. Of course, too many of any of the above will have you seeing pink elephants, the traditional hallucinations of inebriates, whatever the color of their drink of choice. Pink can be an adult color, with its sexual connotations, whispering of the secret places of both a man and a woman. It's the color of sickness (of rashes and scabs and poxes, and the dreaded pinkeye, a contagious, epidemic form of acute conjunctivitis) and of health (to be "in the pink" is to be in good health to the highest form or degree). In the language of flowers, pink roses mean perfect happiness, "please believe me," joy, grace and poetic romance, whereas a pink carnation means "I'll never forget you." In New Age color therapy and aura study circles, pink is said to be soothing on all levels, physical, mental and emotional. It is recommended for treating skin conditions ("especially when combined with aqua," counsels one source), inflammations and the immune system. It can be used to soothe conditions of anger and feelings of neglect. In dream interpretation, pink predicts unusually great success. If pink is your favorite color, says one online color interpreter, you are "kind and compassionate, ever willing to help a distressed soul. Violence is one thing you abhor. Any kind of chaos easily upsets you. You like the luxuries in life, satin sheets and exotic cuisine are more your style. An excess of this may get you preoccupied with the transient pleasures in life. You're an incurable romantic who loves happy endings -- you hurt easily and this leads to your hiding your true feelings. Though most others tend to associate pink with timidity, people who love this color have a subdued drive and usually achieve their goals." The power of pink occasionally becomes political, as in the case of the "pink diaper babies" holding mildly leftist views. Archie Bunker might have called these individuals "pinkos." The political action group CodePinkis a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement that seeks positive social change through proactive, creative protest and nonviolent direct action. And let us not forget the Pink Panthers in the early days of the gay liberation movement. In the shape of a pink triangle, the color had been associated with shame, but was turned into a symbol of pride and memory. "We all love pink, but this year is the first time that pink is taking on a new role in our lives," says style expert Robert Verdi, host of "Surprise by Design" on the Discovery Channel. "We finally have a chance to indulge in pink panache -- and it's not just for women. It has become the new tough color. Rap artists are wearing pink, and Puma came out with the pink shoe. Men and women are wearing pink in their wardrobe, buckling up with pink belts, toting great pink bags and drinking Chambord pink cocktails. "It's a great year to be pretty in pink." | | Senior Sergeant Major | | Posts: 843 Join Date: 17.01.2007 Location: chennai, India | | |
