MOTOGP: Kawasaki express Melandri interest

Kawasaki hold revealed that Marco Melandri is a surprise contender to reinstate the injured John Hopkins at the German princely Prix, if the Italian rider parts way with Ducati.
Melandri has had a dried time at Ducati Marlboro this year, failing to match the walk of teammate Casey Stoner and struggling even to score points.
His difficulties hold left his future at the reigning creation champions in doubt, and contemplation he could exist replaced soon has mounted with information that Sete Gibernau is formerly anew testing for the team at Mugello.
And Michael Bartholemy, Kawasaki’s rivalship superintendent, has suggested that if Melandri is available afterwards he could soil the seat as stand-in for Hopkins in Germany.
“It’s a composite locality,” Bartholemy told Gazzetta dello Sport. “At Laguna Seca we should hold an American rider on track. If Hopkins won’t exist there, we’ll hold one of the Kawasaki USA riders.
“At Sachsenring, howsoever, the bike is available. If Ducati tell us that Marco has no links with them, that there are no kinds of strings attached, afterwards if he’s interested he power get the ride.”
Hopkins suffered leg injuries in a smash during qualifying for last weekend’s Dutch princely Prix and is doubtful for the next two races in Germany and America.

Found this today; sorry if its been posted before.
autosport.com - MotoGP News: Suppo: Next two races crucial for Melandri
Suppo: Next two races crucial for MelandriBy Toby Moody and Matt Beer
Ducati team boss Livio Suppo says the next two races will be critical for the struggling Marco Melandri, as he believes the Italian's past strong form at the Sachsenring and Laguna Seca should allow him to race more competitively.
But Suppo also added that Sylvain Guintoli's progress on the satellite Alice Ducati at Assen this weekend proved that riders other than Casey Stoner could be competitive on the Desmosedici GP8, and that the emphasis was on both Melandri and Guintoli's teammate Toni Elias to similarly raise their games.
Guintoli qualified and finished 10th in the Netherlands, only losing out to ninth-placed James Toseland after a quick trip off the road, while Elias and Melandri crossed the line 12th and 13th respectively, and were the final finishers.
"I'm very happy for Guintoli. I think he's done a very good weekend and without the mistake he probably would have been able to fight with Toseland for ninth position," Suppo told reporters at Assen.
"I think that's reasonably good for a rider with the experience Guintoli has.
"Toni and Marco are in a strange situation. When Valentino (Rossi) caught him, Toni was able to do a 1:37.8 at the end of the race. I don't understand why he didn't do it before.
"Marco is struggling a lot as we know. We've said the same thing since March.
"We now have two races in which last year, in a very difficult season for him, he was able to fight for the podium. At the Sachsenring he was very fast and in Laguna he was on the podium. So let's see at these two circuits, where he used to be very fast, if he can step up a little bit."
Rumours in the Assen paddock suggested that Ducati could drop Melandri after Laguna if he fails to improve at those two races, with speculation linking Sete Gibernau with his seat for the rest of the year.
But there have also been suggestions that Repsol Honda rider Nicky Hayden is being lined up as Melandri's longer-term replacement.
The former champion said yesterday that his 2009 plans were currently unclear, but that he expected to move closer to a deal during July.
"Right now I really don't have a lot to say," Hayden told reporters. "I could give you the runaround, but I don't know. I'm not certain.
"I'm talking to people, but as far as having anything firmed up, who knows if I'll stay, go or what's going to happen. It will start becoming clear in the next few weeks."

What a mess!
Gibernau replacing Melandri who would replace Hopkins this year.
Hayden or Guintoli with Ducati next year.

Default Indy - what Kevin Schwantz says! - 04.07.2008, 15:11

Seven MotoGP representatives were on-track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week, with universal praise for the latest circuit to be added to the World Championship calendar. Whilst riders were present to pick up data for the September 14th Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, former MotoGP World Champion Kevin Schwantz was also in attendance as mentor for Suzuki´s Ben Spies, and added his own positive review of the track.
`I think the layout is great, and for the spectators to come here to the United States and see for the first time 125cc, 250cc and MotoGP all together here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – the mecca of motorsports – is just great,´ said the American at a `MotoGP 101´ media session held on Wednesday.
The 1993 MotoGP World Champion does not bandy praise around lightly, and hinted at some initial skepticism about the incorporation of the speedway within the typical Indy 500 layout. Despite the difficulty of such a project, Schwantz had nothing but good things to say about the work carried out at the legendary circuit.
`We talk about racing inside an oval or at a speedway and it's typically not a very well laid-out venue, and this track has gone to all expenses and have cut no corners to try to make this the best possible motorcycle event here in the United States.´
The emblematic home straight –one of the longest on the calendar and involving a transition through the gears from a near standstill- should provide some entertaining drafting and acceleration on raceday at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix. When quizzed on the best passing spots, Schwantz identified both the straight and its unique first corner as probable prime positions for overtaking.
`The entrance into the first turn here is going to be a spot where guys are not necessarily going in and having to out-brake, but getting a drive and a bit of a draft and going up and taking that spot,´ he analysed.
`Now the guy trapped on the outside is going to have to hold that line all the way around back to that first tight little right-hander that there is. Not to say that it can't be done, but it would take a brave man to try it.´
