Default MotoGP - Indianapolis for 2008??? - 17.02.2007, 05:19

TSN.ca Staff

2/16/2007

MotoGP could be coming to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2008.
IMS president Joie Chitwood tells the Indianapolis Star if a deal is signed, the event will likely take place in August.
While 2008 dates have yet to be confirmed, the Speedway is already committed to the Indianapolis 500 in May, likely Formula One in June and NASCAR in July. That would leave mid-to-late August as the likely date for a MotoGP event as event staff need at least three weeks to covert the oval track to a road course configuration.
Chitwood tells the newspaper the event is not contingent on whether or not Indy extends its Formula One deal beyond 2007
"We've always planned this as a fourth event (for the facility)," Chitwood says. "At that point, the dates are limited."

"It fits in August."
MotoGP is scheduled to visit the United States on July 22 with a race at Laguna Seca. Chitwood says the Indy race would not take the place of any current or future MotoGP races in the United States.

I don't like the idea. How many more races does the championship need. Or are we going to see it replace another traditional venue???

See Ya

More races and I think we'll see more accidents due to rider burn-out. The riders already have too many races in a season in my opinion. Remember last year when the riders got injured, they just couldn't mend in time before they needed to be on the track to race again....it's just pushing the riders over the edge I think.
I think the Safety Commission should discuss just how sensible all these races in a season are, thinking of the safety aspect of the riders that is.

Very good point, Angela. I think you are right that increasing the number of races will not leave enough time for recovery and preparation for the next race each time- the fans would just be getting more of something with a lower quality, so not really gaining in the end. Besides, looking at it selfishly, I don't see myself ever making it to Indianapolis to watch the race...

As an American I would love to have another round here in the US.I think there are other tracks that would be better than Indy. But they may not meet all the criteria. At Indy they would run the infield like f1.It is a flat and featureless track.

Well, there going to have to do ALOT of work on that track, itd be so boring otherwise, its basically going around and around in circles! Vale would get totally bored, theres no good corners to overtake!

As for Laguna, i cant stand the track, safety wise its almost appauling and the heat last year made the race pretty much unbareable both for the riders and the bikes! (remember Vale last yr , also Colin nearly passed out!) I think they should scrap Laguna and find a better track, also they should go to the US when its not heatwave season!
U'd think the safety people would do something about it but Noooo!

Why cant they add an extra european date (if they absoultely have to add an extra one, im sure the riders wont be too pleased about it), im sure there are so many great tracks in Europe that are going to waste, sorry to all the USA people, i just really dont like Laguna! The place is amazing but the track sucks!

Sorry about the rant!

Not a funny joke.
This track has absolutely no interest for a MotoGP race.
Above all for 800cc bikes.
