Today in 1957 Keith Campbell won the Ulster GP at Dundrod in Northern Ireland from Australian Moto Guzzi teammate Keith Bryen to wrap up the 350cc World Championship. Thus today, August 10, marks the 50th Anniversary of Australia's first ever tarmac racing World Championship win.
Campbell's life was cut tragically short the following year when he crashed in a race Cadours (France). After leading the 500 race he crashed on oil left on the circuit from an earlier sidecar race and lost his life. Earlier in the day he had already won the 350cc race at the same event and a week earlier he had finished second at the Belgian 500 Grand Prix either side of the two works MV Agustas.
Campbell's 1957 Moto Guzzi teammate Keith Bryen is still going strong and recently turning 80 years of age.
Thanks to walking and talking Aussie Road Racing historian Don Cox for his assistance in the preparation of this homage to Campbell's great feats.
