I have been thinking - don't totally give up on that photo - have you tried messing about with the "levels" in PhotoShop? I have found it amazing what you can find in what just looks like a blank dark photo when you adjust the levels things appear just like magic. It is never going to be an award-winning pic (except just for the content) but would still be worth it.
And I am not sure if the evening classes will work - I have done so many but it still doesn't help you remember the basics - the main one being having your camera with you and ready for action ALL the time. Did I get any photos when the man crashed into the back of my car? No...I was upset for Gods sake and didn't really feel like wondering if the light was right, which angle would be best, which lens to use...I just wanted to strangle the other driver!
